Project overview

Pukekohe is a growing community, with approximately 50,000 people expected to move into the area over the next 20 years. To support the existing and upcoming growth in Pukekohe North and the Paerata catchment areas, we’re building a new wastewater pump station and installing 4km of pipeline to increase capacity and improve network resilience. The project will also help to protect the environment by reducing the risk of wet weather overflows.

We’re building a new 480l/s (litres per second) transmission wastewater pump station at 50A Isabella Drive, Pukekohe.

Once complete, it will divert the wastewater flows from the existing Cape Hill and Isabella wastewater pump stations (WWPS), allowing us to decommission the aging infrastructure. It will also divert some of the wastewater flows from the Franklin Road WWPS, which will reduce the capacity issues it is currently experiencing.

For the duration of the project, our construction laydown area will be located next to this site at 50 Isabella Drive, Pukekohe.

To connect the new WWPS into the existing network, and divert the wastewater flows from the existing pump stations, we are installing 4km of new pipeline that will run along:

  • Isabella Drive
  • Franklin Road
  • Stadium Drive
  • Station Road, and
  • Manukau Road.

This pipeline will be installed using a combination of open trenching and a trenchless method called Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). Wherever possible, our team will use HDD to reduce the impact to the community.

Current Activity

Construction is progressing across multiple sections of the pipeline alignment, while work continues at the new pump station site in Isabella Drive.

Pump Station and Isabella Drive

The team have recently completed the significant milestone of completing the secant piling for the pump station and storage tanks.

Secant piling is inherently noisy, and we appreciate the patience of our neighbours during this period. We have now progressed with the excavation of the pump station and storage tank shafts.

Construction of the pipeline along Isabella Drive is in progress and is expected to be completed by early 2027. This is a very narrow residential street so the traffic is being managed very carefully, and again we are very grateful to our neighbours for their patience.

Franklin Road

To enable safe and efficient construction of the pipeline, the northbound lane on Franklin Road is closed between the Leisure Centre and Cape Hill roundabout.

Access is still possible to all businesses, including the Stadium and Leisure Centre. There are detours in place for traffic travelling to Cape Hill Road.

Construction activity will progressively move south, extending the pipeline towards Stadium Drive. Works along Franklin Road are scheduled for completion by mid-2027.

Station Road

To install the new pipeline on Station Road, we have been using a combination of open trench and trenchless methods across two sites.

Section M – Station Road south of Subway Road

Once this section is completed it will again be possible to travel from Logan Road, via Yates and Station Roads to the Pukekohe Station.

Section L – Subway Road to Birch Road

The team will move north along the pipeline alignment between Subway and Birch Roads to connect the recently installed pipeline sections.

To carry out this work, traffic will be controlled on a stop/go basis, with temporary traffic lights in place to help traffic move through the area while work continues.

The work between Station and Birch Roads is expected to continue until December 2026.

Alternative parking at the Pukekohe Showgrounds will remain available between Monday to Friday for the duration of the work. Please ensure no vehicles are left over the weekend as this is not a public car park.

Alternatively, rail commuters can use the new Paerātā Station.

How will these works affect you?

Our general working hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am-6pm. During working hours, general construction noise, vibrations, and increased construction vehicle movements should be expected. We will ensure our work is kept within our consented limits.

From time to time, night works may also be required. If this happens, affected residents will be advised in advance.

During this work, an approved traffic management plan (TMP) will be in place. Our traffic controllers will be located along the road to help you during working hours. You will notice changes such as:

  • Stop/go traffic management
  • Partial road closure on Station Road
  • Road diversions
  • Reduced parking
  • Reduced speeds

To keep everyone safe, please follow all signs, light signals, and traffic directions.

During open trenching, access to private property may be temporarily impacted. Our contractors will speak to impacted residents ahead of time.
