Browns Bay Wastewater Pump Station and Pipeline Upgrade

Project overview:

Watercare is upgrading the Browns Bay Wastewater Pump Station and replacing a section of the existing wastewater pipeline (rising main) near the beach end of Browns Bay Road.

These works will help improve the reliability and resilience of the wastewater network serving Browns Bay and help protect the local environment.

A temporary wastewater bypass system has been installed to allow construction to continue while maintaining wastewater services to the community.

What we are doing

The project includes:

• upgrading the existing wastewater pump station

• replacing a section of the wastewater rising main

• installing new mechanical and electrical infrastructure

• improving the long-term reliability and resilience of the local wastewater network

What happens next

A significant project milestone has recently been achieved with the successful installation and commissioning of the temporary bypass system.

The first phase of works, including installation of the new wastewater pipeline along Browns Bay Road, has now been completed.

Construction activities will be temporarily paused from mid-August 2026 while preparations are made for the next phase of pump station works.

During this period, most site personnel and equipment will leave the area. Some traffic management will remain in place to ensure public safety around the temporary bypass infrastructure, which will continue operating while preparations are made for the next stage of works.

Construction activities are currently expected to recommence in late September 2026, with works continuing through late 2026, subject to project requirements and weather conditions.

How will these works affect you?

While construction activities are temporarily paused, residents may continue to notice:

• some traffic management remaining in place near the work site

• the temporary wastewater bypass system remaining in operation

• periodic site visits associated with monitoring and maintaining the bypass infrastructure

Property access will continue to be maintained.

Residents and businesses directly affected by future construction activities will receive further updates before works recommence.

Recent Project Milestone

A major milestone was recently achieved with the successful overnight connection and commissioning of the temporary bypass system.

The temporary bypass is now operating and will allow wastewater services to continue uninterrupted while upgrades to the pump station and pipeline continue over the coming months.
