Fluoride returning to Auckland’s drinking water supply from today
30 March 2026Aucklanders can be assured their drinking water remains completely safe and of high quality.
From today (Monday, April 30), Watercare is progressively returning fluoride to the water treatment process at its water treatment plants over the next two weeks.
Fluoridation was temporarily paused at our metropolitan water treatment plants while we changed stocks of our fluoride product.
The pause followed advice from our supplier that a recent delivery of fluoride treatment product showed differences in chemical composition that, in its concentrated form, could increase the risk of corrosion in our storage facilities.
This was a precautionary step, and at no time has there been any issue with the safety or quality of Auckland’s drinking water.
Keeping Auckland’s water safe is our top priority, and that includes strict controls around how treatment chemicals are used.
As a precaution, we are working with the supplier to remove and replace the product before fluoridation resumes.
We will provide updates if the timeframe for resuming fluoridation changes.
Taumata Arowai and the Ministry of Health have been advised.
